Volunteer Opportunities – We Need Your Help!

LLI-Manassas is a member-run organization. As such, we depend upon volunteers to fill roles that are critical to our governance and operations. We need your career experience, time and energy in the following roles and committees.

Board of Directors: Provides strategic direction, planning, and decision-making.  We need people experienced with collaborative problem-solving and decision-making, organizational leadership, and a desire to serve.  Our Board meets monthly (generally the fourth Wednesday of each month).  Board meetings are open to any members who wish to visit, observe and become more familiar with our governing process.  We anticipate several vacancies on the board beginning Spring 2026.

  • Elected by the membership for a 3-year term.
  • Commitment: Board members are expected to serve on or chair one of LLI’s standing committees, attend monthly meetings, and actively participate in our governing process.

Program Committee:  This committee is critical to our mission.  These are the active, energetic people who go out into our community to identify and recruit potential instructors, propose classes, and serve as class coordinators. If you have contacts in the community, attend an educational lecture, interesting tour, or encounter a great speaker on a topical subject — we urge you to approach that person and inquire if they’d be willing to present for LLI.

  • Commitment: Finding and recruiting instructors for 40+ classes each semester is an active, continuous process.  All committee members are expected to  coordinate several classes each semester.  Two meetings each spring and each fall, plus time required for coordination of your class(es).

Technical and Media Committee:  This committee is responsible to set-up and operate A/V equipment for classes, or act as Zoom host for online classes. Select members also supervise our online media: the LLI website and the LLI admin database (“Proclass”) for membership and registration.

  • Skills:  Comfortable with setting up and operating basic audio-visual equipment — very basic; WE WILL TRAIN!    OR:
  • Good computer skills; comfortable working with Excel and databases. Some familiarity with website content management (WordPress or HTML) is a bonus.
  • Commitment:  Variable depending on position and your skills. We will train!

Membership and Marketing Committee: This committee has two primary functions: to welcome new members, and to advertise LLI to the public. People on this committee welcome new members (via phone and email); obtain and distribute nametags to new members; and conduct new member orientations. They also manage LLI advertising efforts to the public — making flyers and advertisements, posting ads to social media, and providing information on LLI to local news outlets.

  • Commitment: Variable. Major advertising campaigns and welcoming efforts in January and September each year.

Events Committee: Assist in planning and conducting LLI social events (venue coordination; procuring refreshments; manning sign-in and registration tables; greeting guests).

Finance Committee: Oversee LLI’s financial accounting and fiscal policies. Prepare annual budget; assist with annual audit; make recommendations for investments and insurance.
