S23-082, Russia’s Hegemonic Wars: Tsarist, Soviet, and Putinist Trend and Transformation in Security Policy
February 17, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm EST
Zoom
With the recent reappearance of Russian external aggression against Ukraine, this class will provide a historical and comparative overview of Russian power projection in Eurasia. Beginning with the unexpected Leninist persecution of the former Romanov dependencies, continuing with the imposition of a new constitution in 1936 under Stalin, and concluding with President Putin’s sustained efforts to revive Russian imperial power, this class will place the current Ukrainian situation within a larger context. Representation of these conflicts in Russian literature and film, and tentative predictions for the near and far term future of European security will be discussed.
