This class will be a chronological journey backwards and forwards in time to examine the development of English from its prehistoric origins, through Old and Middle English, and finally to Modern English and its many dialects. Dr. Wulf will explore ways in which English as a language has developed, including in its phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. We all know how to speak English–come hear him explain the history of what we say every day!
Presenter: Dr. Douglas Wulf
Dr. Douglas Wulf is associate professor of linguistics at George Mason University. He earned his Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Washington and worked previously as a computational semanticist at a computer firm. His research interests include the application of linguistics to TESOL, formal semantics and the semantics-pragmatics interface, and historical linguistics. He has been a popular speaker for LLI in the past, and we are happy to have him back.
