SUMMARY:F26-1022A\, Puppetry 101
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Heidi Rugg and the Barefoot Puppet Theatre for a deep dive into the art of puppetry. You will learn the five basic types of puppets (hand\, rod\, shadow\, marionette\, and object) in this interactive demonstration. There will be a dash of history\, a handful of contemporary examples in how puppetry works in movies and television\, plus a pinch of geography to round out this interactive experience. \nPresenter: Heidi Rugg\nHeidi Rugg is an interdisciplinary artist with her feet firmly planted in the worlds of both performance and visual arts. As a builder\, Heidi has a passion for eco-friendly processes in puppet-making. Sometimes she even knows the name of the sheep who provided the wool! \nHeidi founded Barefoot Puppet Theatre in 1997\, a company born of her desire to share story-driven\, timely works to uplift young audiences. As a performer\, builder\, writer\, and designer\, Heidi has her hand in every aspect of production while inviting collaborators into her process. In 2005\, Barefoot Puppet Theatre was awarded an UNIMA Citation of Excellence for their original work\, Galapagos George. Barefoot Puppet Theatre continues to tour works to theatres\, schools\, museums\, festivals\, libraries and community centers. People always need a good story. \nHeidi maintains a studio practice from her home on the edge of a swamp in Richmond’s Northside where she lives with her husband (and fellow company member)\, Sam Rugg\, an immortal gecko\, a rescue pup\, and a host of puppets. \nLLI Coordinator: Valerie Kenyon Gaffney

SUMMARY:F26-1028A\, The Science of Learning
DESCRIPTION:Recent advancements in our understanding of how the brain learns have transformed the way we design and support effective instruction. These insights are especially powerful in adult learning\, where research now shows that the brain continues to adapt and reorganize throughout life\, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. As we age\, the brain retains a remarkable capacity for growth\, change\, and new learning.\nIn this session\, Dr. Frank explores how short term and long term memories are formed\, what differentiates them\, and how these processes influence learning outcomes. Participants will examine key factors that shape effective learning—such as attention\, personal habits\, prior knowledge\, and relevancy. Participants will leave with practical\, evidence-based strategies they can start using immediately to strengthen their learning.\nGrounded in Mind\, Brain\, and Education (MBE) Science\, an interdisciplinary field that integrates psychology\, neuroscience\, and educational research\, this presentation translates cutting edge findings into accessible\, actionable guidance. Through MBE principles\, participants will engage with innovative research on adult learning and connect it to real world strategies. \nPresenter: Dr. Christine Frank\nDr. Christine Frank earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Old Dominion University and a master’s in education from Wayland Baptist University. She obtained her doctoral degree from Drexel University in leadership and education\, focusing on mind\, brain\, and education neuroscience. She is a retired 20 year law enforcement veteran of the Albuquerque Police Department (APD)\, where she held numerous positions while serving as the program manager for the Drug Recognition Expert Program for the state of New Mexico. \nLLI Coordinator: Kelly Espy
