DESCRIPTION:These four sessions are facilitated by Alice Mergler\, Dottie Ward-Wimmer\, and Tim Riegner. They will take us into poetic foundations: the ABCs of what poetry is and how to begin planting your words like seeds that grow into rhythms\, rhymes\, stories\, and wisdom. We will write and then read each other’s work\, sometimes silently\, sometimes aloud\, before discussing it. Often hearing their work read aloud helps writers to understand and enhance their own unique style. Please bring writing materials and join us to meet your inner poet. Newcomers are most welcome. \nPresenter: Alice Mergler\, Dottie Ward-Wimmer and Tim Riegner\nAlice Mergler has enjoyed a rewarding teaching career\, 24 years of it spent teaching English\, history\, and drama in Prince William County. She has also enjoyed a lifetime of wonderful accomplishments in her eighty-five years\, including rearing six sons with her beloved husband. She now enjoys being retired\, advising the Poet Laureate Circle\, marketing The Prince William County Arts Council\, and teaching two LLI classes\, Memoir Writing\, and Poetry. Alice also enjoys keeping up with her many grandchildren\, getting 10\,000 steps a day\, and being a Spilled Inker\, a Poetry Open Mic organization for which she just published a second poetry book. \nDottie Ward-Wimmer is a mom\, grandmother\, retired nurse and child therapist\, who writes to celebrate life and the human spirit. At 84\, she still treasures the wisdom of children and silence and the beauty of ordinary things. So far\, she’s had ten poems and one short story published. She won the first prize for poetry in the 2025 Virginia Writers’ Club Golden Nib contest. \nYes\, Tim Riegner is a tall and handsome veteran teacher.  Thirty years of teaching experience divided between Elementary\, where he taught everything\, and Middle School\, where he taught math and environmental science to gifted students.  He is also a former Writing Fellow with the National Writing Project at George Mason and teacher trainer with the National Science Foundation. He and his wife\, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year\, have a son\, a daughter\, and one grandson. Tim’s interests include piano\, ballroom dancing\, arts and crafts\, quilting\, reading\, writing poetry and his memoirs of teaching\, and any form of exercise compatible with his current medical needs. DESCRIPTION:MARS One Thousand One begins with a retrospective by veteran space reporter Miles O’Brien.  He’s familiar to Americans as the reporter who covered so many missions for CNN and has gone on to serve as an independent science correspondent for PBS NewsHour.  In this show\, he plays himself from a future perspective.  He introduces us to the concepts of the Mars IRIS 1 mission and its 1001-day voyage.  Director Robin Sip and his team have painstakingly recreated a mission control\, complete with launch team\, and Miles reports on the mission’s progress from his anchor desk throughout the trip.  MARS One Thousand One is a visually beautiful show that brings the reality of Mars exploration to audiences. It’s set just far enough in the future to seem real while telling a story that we all hope to see and hear in our lifetimes: a trip to the Red Planet. Planetarium director Tony Kilgore will introduce the video and answer questions. \nPresenter: Anthony C. Kilgore\, Planetarium Director\nAnthony C. Kilgore is in his 17th year as planetarium director of the Irene V. Hylton Planetarium\, located inside C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge. SUMMARY:F26-1001A\, The American Civil War: A War of “Firsts"
DESCRIPTION:The American Civil War is generally accepted as heralding a new dawn of warfare and is frequently referred to as the first “modern war.” To this end\, if one takes the time to diligently examine the totality of the conflict\, it quickly becomes apparent that the American Civil War indeed spawned an incredible array of innovations\, changes in warfare\, and advancements in a number of military-related domains. This presentation will focus on a number of unique “Firsts” that the American Civil War introduced to the American military landscape. \nPresenter: Paul Severance\nDr. Paul Severance is a distinguished historian and educator with a career spanning more than three decades. Dr. Severance served as Professor of Strategy and Professor of Military Science at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at Fort Lesley J. McNair from 1993 until his retirement in 2018. \nSince 2013\, Dr. Severance has devoted his expertise to public history\, serving as a volunteer historian at Gettysburg and at Fort McNair\, where he has guided more than five hundred tours\, seminars\, and lectures in the historic courtroom of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators Trial. His work has focused on Abraham Lincoln’s assassination\, the pursuit and capture of the conspirators\, their trial and verdicts\, and the evolution of conspiracy theories that followed. \nDr. Severance is also a faculty member of the Blue-Gray Education Society and is widely recognized as an authority on the American Civil War\, with particular expertise in the campaigns of Gettysburg\, Antietam\, Fredericksburg\, the Peninsula\, and the Seven Days. He holds degrees from Northeastern University\, the Florida Institute of Technology\, and Virginia Tech\, where he earned his doctorate. \nCurrently\, Dr. Severance continues to share his scholarship as an instructor with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the College of William & Mary and the Lifelong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University\, lecturing on the nature of war\, forms of warfare\, military history\, and military geography. \nLLI Coordinator: David Pace

Along the way\, we will also look at the stars and singers who appeared in his many plays and movies.  In addition to success\, we will examine a life that was based on secrecy and tragedy. Filled with great film clips and songs from a number of his plays and movies\, this will be an informative and highly entertaining presentation.  So join us as we learn about another musical legend. \nPresenter: Steven Abramowitz\nSteve Abramowitz grew up in Queens\, New York\, and graduated from C.W Post College of Long Island University. For four years he served as an officer in the United States Navy on aircraft carriers and on a destroyer escort\, where he was a navigator and intelligence officer. Following his time in the Navy\, Steve and his wife settled in New York\, where he worked in advertising and marketing for advertising agencies. For the last 16 years of his career\, he worked in advertising sales for USA Today. Upon retiring in 2013\, Steve found time to explore his love of musical theatre. DESCRIPTION:In the final section of “The Search for the Smallest Thing”\, we’ll get heavily into subatomic particles.  It turns out there are a lot of them\, and a lot of them are made of even smaller particles like “quarks”.  We’ll talk about particle accelerators and how they contribute to new discoveries.  We’ll talk about the Four Fundamental forces that are the foundation of Physics.  We’ll talk about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and how it complicates things.  And finally we’ll talk about the Higgs Boson\, which is responsible for all the mass in the Universe. \nPresenter: Mark Dodge\nMark Dodge received his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California Berkeley and earned his master’s degree in engineering physics from the University of Virginia. He worked as an engineering scientist at IBM and then became a high school physics teacher\, teaching for 24 years. This presentation goes far beyond strategy to reveal the profound human impact of a turbulent war on both American soldiers and local Afghan tribes. \nPresenter: Ross Berkoff\nRoss Berkoff\, a former Captain\, served in the US army from 2002 to 2009\, including 25 months in Afghanistan’s most austere combat outposts. With a master’s degree in public policy and national security and a Top-Secret security clearance\, Ross has worked in the Intelligence community and defense Industry in northern Virginia since 2007. DESCRIPTION:The Prince William County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1731 to provide law enforcement and jailers for the county and towns. Today\, the sheriff’s office provides services to Prince William County\, and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. Sheriff Glendell Hill is a constitutional officer who was first elected as sheriff in 2004. Sheriff Hill will provide an overview of the sheriff’s office mission and the important role the office plays in public safety. In addition\, he will discuss the programs and services they provide to the community including special programs for children and seniors. Following the presentation\, there will be a guided tour of the Adult Detention Center (ADC)\, a fascinating place and not at all like what you see on television. This is a special opportunity to learn more about our ADC.    \nPresenter: Sheriff Glen Hill\nAfter serving in the Army\, Sheriff Glendell Hill  was the first African American to join the Manassas Police Department and the first African American employed in Manassas. In 1982 he was appointed as the Human Resources Director for the ADC.  In 1993 he became Superintendent of the ADC\, followed by being elected as Sheriff of Prince William County in 2023.   After 56 years of law enforcement experience\, he was re-elected to serve has sixth term in 2023. Alice also enjoys keeping up with her many grandchildren\, getting 10\,000 steps a day\, and being a Spilled Inker\, a Poetry Open Mic organization for which she just published a second poetry book. \nDottie Ward-Wimmer is a mom\, grandmother\, retired nurse and child therapist\, who writes to celebrate life and the human spirit. At 84\, she still treasures the wisdom of children and silence and the beauty of ordinary things. So far\, she’s had ten poems and one short story published. She won the first prize for poetry in the 2025 Virginia Writers’ Club Golden Nib contest. \nYes\, Tim Riegner is a tall and handsome veteran teacher.  Thirty years of teaching experience divided between Elementary\, where he taught everything\, and Middle School\, where he taught math and environmental science to gifted students.  He is also a former Writing Fellow with the National Writing Project at George Mason and teacher trainer with the National Science Foundation. He and his wife\, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year\, have a son\, a daughter\, and one grandson. Tim’s interests include piano\, ballroom dancing\, arts and crafts\, quilting\, reading\, writing poetry and his memoirs of teaching\, and any form of exercise compatible with his current medical needs. This presentation will introduce you to the Prince William County Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) and the trained operators who answer the call.  The Community Outreach Team will discuss its function and relationship to the PW County fire and police departments\,  the fire departments of Manassas City and Manassas Park\, and the towns of  Haymarket\, Occoquan\, Dumfries\, and Quantico.  You will learn what is involved in the hiring and training of the tele-communicators that staff the department\, the shifts and hours they work\, and typical situations they encounter on a daily basis. James Hughes holds bachelor’s degrees in both philosophy and the classics from St. Charles Seminary\, Philadelphia.  He holds master’s degrees in both biblical studies and systematic theology from Catholic University in Washington\, D.C.  He was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1982.  More recently he studied at the Virginia Theological Seminary which led to being received as an Episcopal Priest in December of 2016.  Father Hughes worked for the Library of Congress for 23 years in the Visitor Services Office. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Heidi Rugg and the Barefoot Puppet Theatre for a deep dive into the art of puppetry. You will learn the five basic types of puppets (hand\, rod\, shadow\, marionette\, and object) in this interactive demonstration. There will be a dash of history\, a handful of contemporary examples in how puppetry works in movies and television\, plus a pinch of geography to round out this interactive experience. \nPresenter: Heidi Rugg\nHeidi Rugg is an interdisciplinary artist with her feet firmly planted in the worlds of both performance and visual arts. As a builder\, Heidi has a passion for eco-friendly processes in puppet-making. In her creative practice\, she is on a quest to create biodegradable puppets and works primarily with wool\, handmade papers\, and recycled materials. Sometimes she even knows the name of the sheep who provided the wool!  \nHeidi founded Barefoot Puppet Theatre in 1997\, a company born of her desire to share story-driven\, timely works to uplift young audiences. As a performer\, builder\, writer\, and designer\, Heidi has her hand in every aspect of production while inviting collaborators into her process. In 2005\, Barefoot Puppet Theatre was awarded an UNIMA Citation of Excellence for their original work\, Galapagos George. Barefoot Puppet Theatre continues to tour works to theatres\, schools\, museums\, festivals\, libraries and community centers.
