SUMMARY:F26-0915A\, Staying Strong and Independent: What the Science Shows (And What to Do About It)
DESCRIPTION:This session explores the growing body of research on strength training and its role in supporting healthy aging. Participants will learn how strength impacts mobility\, balance\, metabolic health\, and overall independence\, along with practical ways to incorporate it into daily life.\nWe will also examine what happens to the body as we age\, including the natural loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) and discuss simple\, research-backed strategies to address it—particularly through strength training and nutrition.\nAdditional benefits\, including the connection between strength training and cognitive health\, will be introduced to provide a more complete picture of how movement supports overall well-being.\nThe session includes a brief\, guided class demonstration to help participants experience how strength training can be adapted for different levels and abilities\, followed by time for questions and discussion.\nSpecial Note: This presentation serves as both a standalone educational opportunity for anyone interested in understanding what happens to our bodies as we age—and what we can do about it—as well as an informational session for an upcoming multi-week Vivo program offered to LLI Manassas members at a special rate. Participation in the multi-week program is optional and requires a fee separate from LLI membership. \nPresenter: Eric Levitan\nEric Levitan & Kevin Snodgrass – All Vivo trainers are certified and guided by the Head Trainer Kevin Snodgrass\, who leads program development and trainer oversight. Kevin has over 10 years of experience and holds multiple advanced certifications\, specializing in strength and functional training. \nNote the DATE of the ZOOM call – It is September 15\, the day after LLI registration begins. This will give you time to consider a ZOOM exercise program twice a week for 8 weeks. You can pick which days and times work best for you. \nLLI Coordinator: Kelly Espy

SUMMARY:F26-0921A\, Prince William Before\, During & After the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Although no major battles were fought in Prince William County during the American Revolution\, the war still hit home. In 1777 German prisoners of war were housed in Dumfries. Many residents joined militia companies or Continental units while others worked in important industries like the Neabsco Iron Works. Some remained loyal to Great Britain. From 1775 through 1783 Prince William County was consumed by this war\, an event that still impacts us today. In his presentation\, preservationist Bill Backus will bring these events to life. \nPresenter: Bill Backus\, Preservationist/Curator\nA native of Connecticut\, Bill Backus graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in Historic Preservation. Prior to his service with Prince William County\, Bill has worked with the National Park Service at Vicksburg National Military Park and Petersburg National Battlefield. Starting with the county as a historic interpreter\, Bill has served as the Historic Site Manager for Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre and Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park before assuming his current role as Preservationist/Curator. \nLLI Coordinator: Desiree Wolfe

SUMMARY:F26-0923A\, Mr. and Mrs. Citizen General of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Gene Schmiel will introduce us to Citizen General Jacob D. Cox\, who had no formal military training\, yet experienced more facets of the Civil War than most officers: by land and sea\, in both Western and Eastern Theaters\, and among the inner political circles of Ohio and Washington\, DC. Cox later capitalized on his experiences by penning a two-volume Military Reminiscences of the Civil War\, one of the war’s finest memoirs. During the war\, he wrote extensively to his wife\, Helen\, a mother of six and the daughter of Oberlin College president Charles Finney. These intimate and insightful wartime letters were an important basis of much of his memoir\, as well as his monograph\, The Battle of Franklin\, which was the definitive history of that battle for many years. The letters showed both the fondness Cox had for his spouse and his respect for her as an intellectual equal. To Helen\, he revealed—as he did to no one else—his inner thoughts and concerns\, presenting observant\, lucid\, and informative reports and analyses of the war\, his changing life\, and his ambitions as he made the transition from untested soldier to respected general and statesman. \nPresenter: Gene Schmiel\nGene Schmiel is a retired U.S. Department of State foreign service officer\, who also was an assistant professor of history at St. Francis University (PA). He holds a Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University. Gene has written over 30 books about the Civil War and co-authored the first biography of General Irvin McDowell\, Searching for Irvin McDowell: The Civil War’s Forgotten General\, published by Savas-Beatie in 2023. Gene is a docent at the Manassas battlefield and is currently working on a new book\, tentatively to be published by the University of Tennessee Press\, entitled\, The Civil War in Statuary Hall. \nLLI Coordinator: David Pace

SUMMARY:F26-0923P\, The Life of Anne Morrow Lindbergh
DESCRIPTION:These days Anne Morrow Lindbergh is often remembered more for her well-known last name than for her multifaceted talents in writing and aviation. Her marriage to Charles A. Lindbergh\, hero of the skies\, aviation pioneer\, and later controversial political activist prior to World War II\, brought worldwide attention to a reserved\, intellectual young woman. Raised in a world of books\, poetry\, and culture in a close\, loving\, and private family\, Anne was plunged into the role of a loyal\, devoted\, supportive wife dealing with the hordes of people who wanted a part of “Lucky Lindy.” Presenter Kathryn Schmiel will discuss how Anne’s life took a 180-degree turn as she studied aviation\, became a radio operator\, and lived in primitive settings as the couple flew around the world. A tragedy of unspeakable magnitude struck when her 2-year-old son was kidnapped and died. You will learn how she coped with the events of her life\, eventually establishing a highly regarded career as a writer\, raising five children\, and discovering her own personal peace. \nPresenter: Kathryn Schmiel\nKathryn graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and received a master’s in education from George Mason University. She taught at schools in Ohio\, Pennsylvania\, and Virginia\, as well as overseas in Djibouti and Iceland while her husband was posted to American embassies and consulates. She has written several articles about living abroad\, three plays\, and fiction. Her interest in Anne Morrow Lindbergh as a writer\, flyer\, wife\, and mother began many years ago when Kathryn was in high school and read Dearly Beloved. \nLLI Coordinator: David Pace

They settled in Clifton\, where he has lived for 40+ years and enjoyed the old town feel of a place where people can still walk to the post office to pick up their mail and yet enjoy a French pastry in the morning sun. Clifton has often been referred to as “Brigadoon in Virginia\,” also the title of a book describing the essence of life in a small Virginia town.\nThrough the years Charles has served on the Town Council\, the Clifton Betterment Association and\, since its inception in 2018\, as president of the Art Guild Of Clifton. He is also a trustee for the restoration of the historical Primitive Baptist Church\, established by freed black slaves after the Civil War. He is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and the history of the town as the class explores some of the oldest homes and buildings\, telling their story. \nLLI Coordinator: Kelly Espy

SUMMARY:F26-0928A\, Mars 1001: Hylton Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:MARS One Thousand One begins with a retrospective by veteran space reporter Miles O’Brien. He’s familiar to Americans as the reporter who covered so many missions for CNN and has gone on to serve as an independent science correspondent for PBS NewsHour. In this show\, he plays himself from a future perspective. He introduces us to the concepts of the Mars IRIS 1 mission and its 1001-day voyage. Director Robin Sip and his team have painstakingly recreated a mission control\, complete with launch team\, and Miles reports on the mission’s progress from his anchor desk throughout the trip. MARS One Thousand One is a visually beautiful show that brings the reality of Mars exploration to audiences. It’s set just far enough in the future to seem real while telling a story that we all hope to see and hear in our lifetimes: a trip to the Red Planet. Planetarium director Tony Kilgore will introduce the video and answer questions. \nPresenter: Anthony C. Kilgore\, Planetarium Director\nAnthony C. Kilgore is in his 17th year as planetarium director of the Irene V. Hylton Planetarium\, located inside C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge.
